Effects of Ramp Rate Limit on Sizing of Energy Storage Systems for PV, Wind and PV–Wind Power Plants

As the share of highly variable photovoltaic (PV) and wind power production increases, there is a growing need to smooth their fast fluctuations. Some countries have set ramp rate (RR) limits that output powers plants may not exceed. In this study, effects RR limit on sizing energy storage systems (ESS) for PV, wind, PV–wind are examined. These been studied prior PV plants. However, plants, comprehensively first time. addition, size plant considered. The study based climatic measurements carried out with sampling frequency 10 Hz period 153 days. modeling simulation RR-based control algorithm ESS were completed using MATLAB. results show as applied increased from 1%/min 20%/min, required relative capacities ESSs decreased roughly 88%, 89%, respectively. 15%, 12%, 20%, utilization was found decrease grew.
